Giro d' Italia
The most beautiful race in all the world is how they call it, and really I think this is right on. I really enjoy watching this sport and really the pros are the ones that make it the most beautiful at times. This is a race much like the Tour de France but it is the Italian version. Every county if Europe pretty much has one with the three major ones being Italy, France and Spain. The Giro is always first in May, then the tour in June/ July and the one in Spain is usually in August. So this years Giro has been just great, really as exciting of a grand tour as there has been in some time. Tomorrow just so happens to be a very unique and grueling stage. An up hill time trial of just under 14km. However it is to the top of a ski resort and there are at time parts that are 25% plus is grade. Steeper than the puke. So steep that they cannot even pave it. So if you can wake up super early before school and go watch you should and then watch it everyday after because the lessons you can are many. The the link is here: http://www.steephill.tv/giro-d-italia/#live.
Mt Lemmon Times
Times have been posted. I want to however have you all see them on the web site that Hunter's brother keeps. It is www.velocitysgroupcycling.com. From there you will be able to find the results and other interesting stories. I often check his site for stuff and he gave the team a nice donation this year so we can all say thanks to that, but here they are if that does not work. Your time is first followed by your average speed.

Mt. Lemmon TT
I know all ready. It's real early in the summer season for this one, but well times a change and so did the date for this great Tucson event.
Registration is at Lerua's Restaurant on Broadway across the street from the Safeway at the Cambell intersection. They open the doors at 4pm to start registration so I will be there around 3:30pm to try and ensure us the best possible start times, meaning early. I am going to register all of you guys together so we can play the coyote and rabbit game.
The first rider goes off at 6:30am and hopefully we are not too far behind.
Daniela and I are going to be riding the tandem up that day and we are going to get a head start on all of you.
Why?
Because we would like to take you all out to Bobo's after wards, and if you don't catch us than you have to pay for your own breakfast. Not really so if you can all bring $2 that would be great. Same as all ways the pancake and all.
Also I suppose we need to drive out there, however I do not know what time we need to be out there until we get our start times.
This event is for everyone. Some of you will be registered as races and some of you like Ashley and Julia will be out there as well enjoying the cool air at the top and the sweet pancake at the end.

State Champ Road Race Recap
First off-- Kathleen your pictures are totally the best and we are super lucky as a team to have you as such a devoted parent and helper. Thank you. We could not have had such a successful weekend without all your tireless help. THANK YOU!!!
Also to Mark and Kathy ( Nathans parents). They let me borrow their car so as to make it possible to get everyone to the race. THANK YOU!!!
So how did it go? Well if you look at the pics you can tell. We did incredible. After being shut out from the top spot of the podium during the crit champs, we came back to claim two state titles. Lizzy and Logan both earned new jerseys, unfortunately though their jerseys wont fit me, so only they will be allowed to wear them.
The race is brutal, with incredible climbs that make Gates pass look flat and short. I ended up driving behind the race with Donovan because he was not feeling well, and really just tailing Lizzy. I knew that if we were there to encourage her that she had a real chance. So I can give a real good play by play of her race and really just anecdotes about the others so here we go.
Lizzy's race-- An 18 mile point to point. So start and go 18 miles to the finish. The start of the race was a long 8 mile false down hill. The boys and girls of the 13-14s road out together with the 10-12s as well. Lizzy always being a bit timid to ride in the pack dangled off the back of a pace that was not too fast. Then came the first hill. Approximately a 2 miler at 6%. The group of older boys went to the front and started setting a pretty good pace that really stung out the group, Lizzy again off the back. By the top of the climb she was about 10 seconds behind the 3 Yuma girls. The decent though allowed her to catch up again. At this point Donovan and I were just hoping she could hang for a bit longer because then climb #2 came. Much longer maybe 4 miles long and really just as steep. As the climb started Logan went to the front of the pack and set a pace that left him with only Kenny Polley to deal with. As for Lizzy she again fell behind the three Yuma girls who at this point were being led out by one of their male team mates. Lizzy soldiered on though about 5 seconds behind the girls falling into her own pace. And then it happened. The Yuma girls started to crack one by one they started to really have to throttle back so they could have enough energy to keep going. Lizzy however found her groove and quickly made up the little bit of time she had to passing two of them.
So now it was her, Andrea and a random Yuma boy who was setting pace for the girls. As soon as I realized this I told Lizzy to get behind the Yuma boy and let him do the work. But wouldn't you know he too was about to crack and Andrea could just not hold on any longer either. When this moment came though Lizzy runs into the Yuma boys rear wheel then gets tossed to her right running over rumble strips and then bumps into Andrea, and amazingly she stays up.
( Thanks for the skills Hunter!!!) The adrenaline from this though sparks her to then come around everyone and get to the top of the second climb with about a 30 second gap. Once she gets to the top though I inform her of her gap and she kind of starts to freak out. Looking around and getting nervous. However she settles down, and she holds onto this lead till the top when the boy from Yuma is able to catch her. So now we have a 30 second gap and a 7 mile down hill to go. The Yuma boy at the top of the climb then decides to get in front of Lizzy and tries to drop her on the down hill. Little does he know thought that Lizzy has ridden my wheel many a time down Mt Lemmon. So try and try as he might to drop Lizzy she just keeps hanging on, all the while building a huge lead over her competition. By the end of the race she had about a 3 minute lead and road over the line on her own. A job really well done. Most exciting too that her brother got to watch the whole thing with me cheering her on the whole time.
Logan had the same race however over the last climb he was all alone with Kenny Polley. They then road the last 7 miles together and right before the finish there was a good rise of a hill much like the Greesewood sprint hill we race over all the time. Logan timed it perfectly to get the win. Kenny took the the first charge and Logan just waited for his moment and upon his strike he was able to take by about 20 feet. He as pumped, and well deserving.
I am super proud of the two.
As for the 17-18s. I did not get to see much of the race. I am going to try and get one of them to write about how it went. Kramer finished 4th, Marcos 7th and man was he close to finishing even better. Pablo and Nathan road and suffered together.
Max and Alex also road in the 4s race. I really did not see any of it and can't speak to too much of it. However I also will ask Max to write something for everyone.
Great, Great, Great weekend everyone. I had a blast and the China Buffet was well you know almost as good as my pudding at the end.
Thanks El Grupo!!!
Oh and to Donovan for being such a big help through out the day, and really I hope to never do that with you again D.

May is here: Upcoming races, outreach, bike tour!!
May is looking just as busy as April - too busy in fact to have our monthly team meeting it seems (Mothers would not be happy with us if we tried for this Sunday!) So we need to communicate a lot of upcoming events and NEED responses from all on some things. Here it goes:
May 8th, Mother's Day: Should we have practice? Please respond if you think you have time to ride up Mt. Lemmon - the TT is in 2 weeks! If you need to spend time with mom, that is OK!
May 16th: State Championship Road Race in Globe, AZ (same course as last year) This will be an early morning, but not as bad as others, just quite HOT! Ignacio will be signing up those who are interested in riding (unless you always sign yourself up) this weekend - if you haven't already, let us know if that is you.
May 22nd: REI Grand Opening, bike valet. El Grupo will be providing bike valet at the new REI store on Saturday. This is a great way for us to make friends, check out the new store, and possibly raise some money. Set up at 8am and we can be out of there by 12. Breakfast is involved. We need at least 4 people if not more to cover this to break up the time.
May 23rd: Mt Lemmon Time Trial: This is a 0 - 12 mile up the hill "race" with 30 seconds in between the person in front of you and another behind you. Lots of fun and pain. Registration is the night before (Saturday) at Lerua's Mexican Restaurant. Ignacio will be going and others can join him if you like.
May 28th - 31st: Luna Lake Bike Tour with GABA. This is an awesome bike tour and we hope that as many El Grupo folks can do this as possible. Beautiful riding, fun camping, good food, low cost. Our GABA "work trade" hours cover the cost of the trip and all we pay for is the food (catered and good!) We ABSOLUTELY NEED TO KNOW if you will be going on this trip ASAP to reserve our spots. We will drive up to Springerville (east of Show Low) on Friday afternoon/evening, ride 3 days, and drive back Monday afternoon/evening. Not a trip to miss, but LET US KNOW!! (oh and a truck carries all your gear so all you have to worry about is pedaling!)
Whew! And that doesn't even count the weekday practices that are still going on to get you ready for all this! May is busy, so please communicate with us so we can make it go smoothly and enjoy it!

AZ Crit Champs
Another super successful, fun, and crazy weekend.
13-14 Boys
2nd Place Tulio
3rd Place Logan
Tulio and Logan really drove the pace of this race the whole time. They were the two at the front every time I saw the race and really putting the pressure on. Kenny Polly the eventual winner really nailed the finished and got great position for the win. He deserves a lot of credit for a smart race, but the boys in that race were cooked because Tulio and Logan pushed the pace.
13-14 Girls
2nd Place Lizzy
Lizzy could have had a better chance to win this race had she realized she could ride in her big ring the whole time. She spent the first 10 min of the 20 min race in the middle ring letting the other girls open up a 30 second gap. Once I realized this I started telling her to shift and don't you know in less than 2 laps she had closed the gap and by the end she was sprinting for the win. A Yuma girl Andrea got her at the line, but a great battle non the less.
15-16 Boys
4th Place Max
Max endured a really crummy starting position to open the day, fought his way to the front, then really poured it on for most of the race. He knows where he could have won the race and knows that next time the others might not be so lucky.
10-12 Boys
4th Place Avery
Donovan and Nathan also raced and did quite well while learning a ton. They both got beat by a few people and beat a few people, and finished having enjoyed the race.
Everyone came away from the race realizing things they had done well and things they could do better, so I am very pleased with the teams ability to learn.
Max, Alex and Tulio also raced in the cat 4 and 5 races respectively but I have no official results.
Alex told me he finished top 10 while Max got tangled up in a crash and was unable with 2 laps left to catch and contest the finish.
As for Tulio I have no idea how he did, but I am going to presume quite well he was riding with a pretty big smile on Sunday.
Congratulations to all and I am really looking forward to the road race champs.

Thanks Kathleen for the photos and this weeks practice schedule is now posted on the calender. Hope to see you all soon!!
